Dax Whitney Earns Three More Weekly Honors
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State right-handed pitcher Dax Whitney picked up a trio of honors on Tuesday. He was named the National Pitcher of the Week by both Perfect Game and the College Baseball Foundation. Whitney was also selected as Co-Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
The three honors come a day after he was named the Golden Spikes National Pitcher of the Week.
Whitney tied the Oregon State single-game record with 17 strikeouts in the Beavers’ 3-1 win over Baylor on Friday. He faced 25 batters and gave up two hits, a walk and a hitter batter.
Whitney, from Blackfoot, Idaho, recorded at least one strikeout in all seven innings he worked. He struck out the side in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Whitney retired the last 11 batters he faced, nine by strikeout.
The sophomore tied a record that had been reached twice previously. Mason Smith struck out 17 against Portland in 1994 and Cooper Hjerpe matched that mark in a 2022 game against Stanford.
Whitney also set the Dell Diamond record for most strikeouts in a game at the stadium. It opened in 2000.
The righty has allowed one run in 12 innings this season for a 0.75 earned run average. He has 23 strikeouts on the year, limiting opponents to seven hits and four walks.
Oregon State returns to action Friday when playing the first of three games in Frisco, Texas. The Beavers take on Houston in a game that starts at 12 p.m. PT (2 p.m. in Texas).
