Mabeus a semifinalist for Buster Posey Award

EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon catcher Burke-Lee Mabeus was selected as a semifinalist for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award presented by Hasty Sports, the Wichita Spots Commission announced on Monday.

Mabeus is the first Ducks’ backstop to be named a semifinalist for the honor. He is one of 16 catchers nationwide chosen by the committee.

The Henderson, Nev., native capped off Oregon’s regular season on Saturday with a walk-off base-hit bunt with two outs to give Oregon a 6-5, 14-inning, win over No. 16 USC. He finished the regular season slashing .313/.411/.556 with a .967 OPS while delivering 20 extra-base hits (7 HR, 1 3B, 12 2B) with 28 RBI and 31 runs scored in 47 games played. He also swiped two bags and reached base on 24 free passes (20 BB, 4 HBP) while striking out just 27 times.

Defensively, opponents attempted just 23 stolen bases against Mabeus with the Ducks’ catcher retiring 10 of the runners. Among catchers in the Big Ten Conference who have played in at least 30 games, Mabeus leads the league in caught stealing average (48 percent), strikes looking above average (48.36 strikes added) and fielding runs above average (2.17).
